ROCK. The specific aims of this project are to (1) examine the epistemological and ideological foundations of this dual approach to the study of the natural world as they manifest themselves in the modern era and (2) examine how that the dualism of scienti-

stician and intuitive modes of knowing has played out and been transformed within the study of the natural world. I contend that these two distinct but related traditions of thought, with their divergent claims to authority, are reflected in the modern study of the natural world in the scientific and the literary modes. Focusing on the period of the early to mid-nineteenth century and the latest decades of the twentieth century, I examine the distinctions between the uses of the word “science” in the natural and literary world, as well as the distinctions between the different conceptions of objectivity and subjectivity in the natural and literary worlds. I also focus on the different versions of objectivity and subjectivity that are advocated in the natural and literary sciences. I question the scientific image of the world promoted by modern science and highlight the failures of that image.
My emphasis on the natural world is based on a concern with the question of whether the natural sciences are inherently related to a conception of nature, rather than to the human, which are central to the literary tradition. My project begins by examining the current debates on the “science wars” and seeks to uncover the historical roots of those disputes, focusing on the shift in disciplinary boundaries that occurred in the first half of the twentieth century, which contributed to the emergence of a distinctive science and literature. By examining the shifts in disciplinary boundaries that accompanied these shifts in the meanings of “science” and “literature” I hope to uncover the tensions between these traditions that continue to characterize their relations to each other and to the larger project of modern culture.

My focus on the natural world is also intended to illuminate the impact of the growingly fragmented world of post-modern and cultural studies on literary and cultural criticism, and the potential of the literary mode to challenge or reformulate traditional conceptions of knowledge and subjectivity. 01e38acffe
